The Akan tribal people of Ghana in West Africa believe that the past serves as a guide for planning the future.
The Sankofa bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back symbolizes one taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through benevolent use of knowledge.
The mission of the Sankofa Project located at St. Peter’s AME Church is to provide an environment for people of all ages to look back at, reflect on and learn from past history, traditions and values with the goal of taking action on issues of race, class and culture in personal, family and community life. These formal, guided and experiential opportunities are meant to promote transformation in individual, family and community life. Education, insight and skill building are all critical components for transformation.
